What We'll Cover

  • How to open the planning view with Command P

  • How the inbox and calendar work together

  • The morning routine that sets the day

Aftertone has two main screens you switch between with Tab: the Calendar view and Focus Mode. Within the Calendar view, there is also a Planning view for organising tasks across future days and projects.

The Calendar view

The Calendar view is where you plan and schedule your day. On the left is a side panel with your Inbox, Today, and Upcoming lists. On the right is your calendar showing your time blocks and Google Calendar events. Drag a task from the side panel directly onto a time slot in the calendar to schedule it at a specific time.

Press P on any task to open a planning menu โ€” choose today, tomorrow, in 2 days, or a custom date. The task moves to that day's list without being assigned to a specific time slot.

The Planning view

Press Shift P to open the Planning view within the Calendar screen. The Planning view shows your full inbox on the left. On the right you can switch between Days, Projects, and Tags views. Use it to plan tasks for a specific future day, move tasks between projects, or organise by tag โ€” without committing to a time block yet.

How to use the Calendar view each morning

Open Aftertone before you check email. Look at what is already in your calendar. Then work through your Today and Upcoming lists and drag your most important tasks into time slots on the calendar. Aim to have your top 3 priorities blocked before you do anything else.

Keep the inbox manageable

If your inbox has more than 15 tasks, open the Planning view with Shift P and triage before scheduling. Move future tasks to a specific day, shift tasks between projects, or delete anything no longer relevant. A smaller inbox makes daily scheduling faster.

When you are done planning

Once your time blocks are set, press Tab to switch to Focus Mode. You do not need to return to the Calendar view until something changes or the next morning.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Try it now โ€” Open the Calendar view and drag your most important task for tomorrow onto a specific time slot. Then press Tab to switch to Focus Mode.
